in plain english

Titanic: 160 Minutes is a turn-based command game written in BASIC using QB64. You take charge immediately after the Titanic strikes the iceberg at 11:40 PM and play through sixteen ten-minute turns before the ship sinks at 2:20 AM. The goal is not to save the ship, it is to save as many of the 2,200 people aboard as possible. You play by choosing numbered orders for five crew groups, each with its own duties. Deckhands prepare lifeboats, launch them, and fire rockets. Officers load lifeboats, restore order, and fire rockets. Stewards guide people up from below decks, calm panic, redirect crowds, or stay free to help load boats. Engineers run pumps and maintain the dynamos that keep power going as flooding worsens. The wireless operator sends distress signals, listens for replies, and coordinates rescue with the ship Carpathia. Each turn, the game redraws a command board showing available crew, actions already taken, ship condition, and the results of your last order. The eight lifeboat groups represent the historical twenty boats and hold about 150 people each, for 1,200 total seats. Boats must be prepared, then loaded, then launched, since people in a loaded boat are not yet safe. Panic makes loading harder, though officers and stewards can reduce it. Wireless work raises the chance of a water rescue, capped at 200 people. Engineers and the wireless operator must eventually be pulled from their posts, or leaving them there at 2:20 caps your final rating. The historical death toll left about 705 survivors, while this game's practical maximum is 1,400 people saved. It is a simplified command and resource management game built around the real tragedy, not a literal recreation of every historical detail. You can run the included Windows executable directly with no installation, or open the provided QB64 source file and run or compile it yourself if you would rather not run a downloaded EXE.
