in plain english

Swiff is an Android app that lets you play old Flash games and animations on your phone or tablet, now that Flash itself no longer runs in browsers. It uses a project called Ruffle to interpret Flash content, so if a game already runs well in Ruffle it is very likely to work in Swiff too. The app connects to the Flashpoint Archive, a large preservation project, giving access to over 100,000 pieces of Flash content that you can download and play directly from the app. It also supports newer HTML5 browser games. On the input side, Swiff offers on screen touch controls plus the ability to map a physical gamepad to keyboard and mouse actions, since most Flash games were built for a keyboard and mouse. Beyond playback, Swiff includes some extra conveniences: an offline proxy that tricks certain games into thinking they are still running on their original website, integration with Newgrounds so you can download games from that site and unlock in game medals, support for Android launcher shortcuts, the ability to export save files to a folder so they can sync with tools like Syncthing, and support for importing your own custom SWF files with the same features as built in games. The developer built Swiff after struggling to find a good way to play an old Newgrounds game on their own Android device, since existing options were ad heavy, slow, or did not integrate well with Android home screen launchers. According to the project FAQ, Swiff is currently closed source. The developer has said that if the project is ever abandoned, the source code will be released, but for now it stays closed. The app is distributed through its GitHub Releases page and can also be added to the Obtainium app updater. There is a Discord community for discussion and an Issues page on the repository for bug reports and feature requests.
