Openai Cover Skill is an open source add on for Codex that generates original editorial style cover images for articles, product announcements, research reports, partnership posts, and social media cards. Instead of relying on fixed templates or reference images to copy a look, it uses written rules to decide layout, typography, and composition, then calls GPT Image 2, OpenAI's image generation tool built into Codex, to actually produce the picture. The skill offers nine distinct visual styles, ranging from cool toned optical looks and soft organic florals to close up photographic objects and bold poster type, along with three content modes, meaning image only, image with text, or image built around material you upload, and three aspect ratios to fit different placements. You can bring your own logo, icons, product screenshots, illustrations, charts, or photos, and the skill tries to keep their proportions and details faithful rather than stretching or distorting them. To use it inside Codex, you mention the skill by name and describe what the cover is for. An interactive card then lets you pick the style, content mode, and aspect ratio, or you can specify all of that up front in your instructions. If you are including your own images, you upload them separately and describe what role each one plays, such as a logo or a screenshot. Once everything is confirmed, the skill writes a detailed prompt from its style rules, generates the image with GPT Image 2, and checks the result for spelling mistakes, distorted materials, and whether the title stays readable at thumbnail size. Installation happens either through Codex's built in skill installer with a single command, or by manually cloning the repository and copying its folder into the Codex skills directory, followed by a Codex restart. The project is community made and has no official relationship with OpenAI, and it is released under the MIT license, so you are free to use, modify, and share it, including commercially, as long as the copyright notice stays intact.
