in plain english

Awesome Codex Theme is a library of full visual skins for the Codex Desktop app, the desktop client used with ChatGPT. Rather than being a simple color palette, it changes the desktop background, the light and dark color systems, the translucent look of the sidebar, cards, and composer, and the theme's name and short copy, while leaving the app's actual layout, navigation, and controls untouched. Each theme is packaged as a code-free .act-theme archive containing a manifest, verified images, and a fallback native color palette for cases where a full background image cannot be applied. A separate open source Theme Manager application is responsible for actually applying and cleaning up these themes, checking processes, and verifying images, so a theme pack itself carries no executable code. There are three ways to get started. The recommended one is asking a coding agent such as Codex or Claude Code to install the Theme Manager, using a prewritten prompt that tells the agent to only use an official installer from GitHub Releases and never to touch core application files or bypass security warnings. Contributors can instead build from source, which needs Node.js 22 or newer plus Rust and platform tools for building the desktop app. The third option is downloading a prebuilt release manually, quitting the ChatGPT app, opening Theme Manager, picking a theme and mode, and applying it, with an option to restore the original look at any time. The project currently ships 68 themes, browsable in an online gallery, and targets both Windows and macOS, though the Windows build has been tested more thoroughly for keeping a theme applied across app updates than the macOS build has. Themes and the manager app update independently, so new themes appear automatically without needing to reinstall the app itself. The manager's code is released under the MIT License.
